Condoleezza Rice, next in charge, was shopping for shoes at Ferragamo's and watching Spamalot on Broadway and catching the US Open in New York; while Andy Card, the White House chief of staff, who is supposed to keep it all together, was taking in the sea breeze with much of the rest of the Bush crowd in Maine.
Rats gnawing at corpses floating down the streets three days after Katrina struck, bodies left to decompose in the stairwells of New Orleans's main hospital because its basement mortuary was flooded, tens of thousands still trapped, hungry and thirsty: only then did the inquests into what the Los Angeles Times called the "surreal foreignness" of it all start.
But then the questioning was imbued with a peculiarly American self-righteousness and aggressive need to pin blame on the guilty: on the inattentiveness of the Bush administration, its lack of foresight, the racial and class divisions within the US, and so on.’

From my inbox:
I've been raised to Love my God, and Love my Country; I've also been taught to fear the wrath of my God, and fear the wrath of Country. Before you begin to read into my statements, think of each with it's own laws and repercussions. I was taught to live according to the Bible and the written law of government.
I am not ashamed to say I'm an American Citizen. Although, I am ashamed to say, I see things going on, that I do not condone, nor do I protest. I'm afraid I may speak for many when I say, I've worked hard to get where I am, I work hard to stay where I am today. I get up exhausted, I work all day exhausted, I come home and get ready for the next work day. I, as many do, have so much already to deal with, fighting with the government and/or any injustices we see, is too much for us to handle! We see it...but, to relieve one little bit of stress is to say...well, there is always tomorrow.
I hear the facts. I see the actions. I see and hear things I am against and/or disagree with, but I'm just too tired to fight. Gas is going to go up $40 a barrell...and it goes up $.50 a gallon?? Who profits? Don't answer, I know. Everyone knew Katrina was coming a week before it hit...Why wasn't any plans made earlier? Don't answer, that'll never be really clear. Millions have been donated to the cause, and "billions" need to be ok'd...why, who, where, huh?...I'm too tired to calculate...
I, just like some of the weaker willed, keep looking for a better, brighter day. Everything we have, everything we "get", it happened because we came together as a nation. We, (well, I didn't) have asked for what we have gotten to this point. In order to keep my sanity, I wake every morning, take a deep breath, and think of others who need me more than I need to be here on this earth.
My long statement that went nowhere means; to avoid going crazy with everyday stresses and the stresses of the world, I have chosen to be guilty of neglect regarding standing up and fighting for what I know is wrong. I do love my Country, and I am proud of who I am...ONLY because I feel someday....GOOD will prevail!

I've been thinking. (insert laughter here). Every time someone commits an Act of Violence - everyone on the Boob Tube expresses concern over the WHY and senselessness of it all. Then they disappear until the next Act of Violence. I'm beginning to think that Geo W Bush is the product of what I called "Failed to be Nurtured". Children of the very rich, drug addicts, and abusive homes which are violent, abusive or just plain EMOTIONALLY DAMAGED .. are NEVER to RARELY treated (unless you count the drugs they are put on as treatment). Our Nation is becoming numb to violence and our compassion level is all but disappearing in favor of TV Spin Doctors, NEWS Bots Enhancing facts for Ratings; LIES spun into Truth; ------ so I decided to test it out .. I found myself becoming more defensive and less compassionate also.
Soldiers here are especially vulnerable as their instincts (after returning from Iraq) are fight (not flight) -- Have talked to several soldiers who are leaving for Iraq who believe that folks do not support them. -- and so I decided to do the ''pay it forward'' thing. What I did required me to explain myself LMAO. The person who was required to assist me and keep me anonymous was overcome with 'WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?" A small insignificant act of anonymous kindness is so rare and here where it is needed the most - Ft Bragg USA.
I passed a soldier playing his music so loud I couldn't hear myself think and so I waved at him with a thumb's up and he smiled at me. When I see a vehicle in my rear view mirror and it has a 'MILITARY DECAL' on it. I pull over and let them pass, even if I have to pull off the street completely.. and I wave and smile and give a thumbs up.
Have not found a single soldier who has seen the pro-soldiers web sites and poems, prayers, and way to go e-mails. Saw one soldier on crutches walking miles from Womack Army Hospital back to his unit in 98 degree+ heat. [yes I drove him the rest of the way.] I see the pain in the faces of the soldiers all the time. Boy, they could sure use some REAL leadership and some REAL help when they get home. It ain't there - trust me - it ain't there except for the occasional one used as MEDIA OP -- it just ain't there. They get a LOT of MEDIA exposure, pictures, etc ---- but all designed to make the Command and Leadership look ''good".
Let us take a break from criticizing and get up and out and "do something". Homebound folks can hang a way to go SOLDIER - we love you sign ... Let us stop giving Dubya our time and energy - he is immune (or medicated too highly) to feel it or care. A sociopath has no conscience. How did he get that way and can we prevent it and save just a few souls? If this sounds sorta like pity for Dubya - it is .. He is what he is. We are what we are.
We can fix the planet one inch at a time but we have to start doing it - now. Not just for military soldiers but for all humanity - even for those who don’t deserve it.
I find I am having to 'train' myself to not have that ''defensive attitude'' when I see things like moms screaming at kids .... ya gotta smile and say things like "boy it's hard nowadays to shop with kids" and smile smile - and act like you think she is suffering instead of the child . AND well, most of the time here, she is. This is Fort Bragg country after all and the odds are that they are military wives.
We must be kind, give respect, and treat with dignity those who we might think do NOT deserve it. Perhaps if we all do the ''pay it forward'' thing - we can make the planet a better place one inch at a time.
Link to the site: (just found it this morning)
If you haven't seen the movie "Pay It Forward" - I would recommend it highly.
Let's Just Do It .. ~~Fix the Planet One Inch at a Time~~

Q -Why do Presidents always do photo op on Military Installations, especially when they are having popularity problems?
A -Because the soldier must show respect and honor them. They can go to prison if they do not. Here is the UCMJ Law (Uniform Code of Military Justice) and I swear it has been updated. It used to list only the Pres, VP and Secy of Defense when I was in. Sigh Now it might even include FEMA and Homeland Security. Geesh!!
888. ART. 88. 889. ART. 89 DISRESPECT TOWARD SUPERIOR COMMISSIONED OFFICER -- Any person subject to this chapter who behaves with disrespect toward his superior commissioned officer shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

The pastor explains that for years he has warned people that unless Christians in New Orleans took a strong stand against such things as local abortion clinics, the yearly Mardi Gras celebrations, and the annual event known as "Southern Decadence" - an annual six-day "gay pride" event scheduled to be hosted by the city this week - God's judgment would be felt.
“New Orleans now is abortion free. New Orleans now is Mardi Gras free. New Orleans now is free of Southern Decadence and the sodomites, the witchcraft workers, false religion - it's free of all of those things now," Shanks says. "God simply, I believe, in His mercy purged all of that stuff out of there - and now we're going to start over again."
